Top Weight Loss Tip: Curb the Soda

SodaIf you’re looking to lose weight and you drink soda of any type, you could trim inches off of your waist with this one simple tip! Limiting or reducing soda or diet soda could make a major difference between being overweight or reaching your ideal weight.

Medical News Today reports, “Soda was once considered an occasional treat, but consumption has steadily increased over the last three decades. Many Americans drink soda every day. Demand is so great that manufacturers produce enough soda to supply the average man, woman and child in America with more than 52 gallons each year.”  The article goes on to say that soda has been linked to type 2 diabetes, obesity and a host of other illnesses.

Here are the ways in which soda directly contributes to those extra pounds:

  • Regular Sodas - have an excess of sugar and calories, at about 140 calories per  soda
  • Drinking soda often replaces more nutrient-rich and lower calorie foods.
  • Diet Sodas- may not have the sugar, but the artificial sweetener has been shown to create an insulin spike like sugar produces. This spike is responsible for fat storage, vs. fat burning of the foods we eat.
  • Metabolic Syndrome – This condition can occur by drinking only 1 diet soda a day, and is the leading cause of insulin resistance, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.

Additionally, regular soda consumption has been linked to osteoporosis and declining health in general, including stomach problems. That said, many of us enjoy the social aspects of drinking soda at parties and out at restaurants.  We’re not saying that you need to eliminate it completely from your diet, but if you lower your consumption to a few times a week, you could still realize most of the weight loss and health benefits. Try out some of the nice passion fruit or green iced teas in its’ place, which is a nice refreshment.
