Halloween and Your Weight Loss

Halloween can be a fun time for kids and adults alike!  Celebrations, parties, Trick-or-Treating and the chance to dress up appeals to the inner child in us. It also provides a chance to enjoy some candy and snacks almost guilt-free. This is where the ‘goblins’ can come in and derail the best plans for our weight loss.

A goblin as a small, supernatural creature that causes problems for human beings. When it comes to our eating, there are a numberIt of goblins that can derail us.  Our friends invite us to a party and we drink too much, and then eat too much. The Trick-or-Treaters don’t eat up all the candy you bought, or the office has an extra batch of cider donuts sitting around.  All of these are understandable opportunities for overeating on the sweets,  but please remember these facts about sweets and sugar:

  • Since all sweets contain sugar, let’s look look at it up close. Sugar is literally addictive. It  has the same chemical effects on the brain that heroine does.
  • Treats provide empty calories. It has no nutritional value, and therefore puts a strain on your body to process it.
  • Sugar is most often found in foods that are loaded with calories and fat, therefore making them even more harmful.
  • It has been linked to a host of illnesses and health problems including: a weakened immune system, yeast infections, hyperactivity, cavities,  hyperglycemia, and more.
  • Many of the sweets and snacks we eat are actually made with high fructose corn syrup, a cheaper alternative to sugar. This product is so bad for you, it would require another entire post.

If you happened to overindulge, here are some tips to help you get back on track quickly:

  • Give away all snacks and goodies that you have in your house right now.
  • For the next week cut your sugar intake by 90%, allowing an occasional snack at most. This will help you get out of any craving cycle you may be in.
  • For the same reason, over next week cut your intake of refined carbohydrates in half or more.
  • Focus on veggies and lean protein for the next week, with a few fruits per day as a snack.
  • Increase your water intake – taking in at least 2 liters a day. This will help you to clean out your system.

Taking these actions simple actions can help you undo any temporary damage caused by the Halloween goblins. If you need additional support for your weight loss goals, it would be wise to check into a weight loss plan too.
